About us

Hej! Welcome to our amazing blog Lätt som en Plätt!

If you are thinking about moving to Sweden or you recently moved or you have been living here for while, then this blog is just for you! Swedes are more than welcome to share and comment too, of course!

Lätt som en plätt! or “Easy as pie!” (translated from Swedish) is a place where you will find our thoughts, our experiences, tips and fun facts about living in Sweden as an expat.

Why did we choose this name for our blog, you ask? Well, let us tell you a short story…

You’ve just moved to a new city. Maybe even a new country. Perhaps you’ve crossed an entire ocean, landing on a completely different continent. Everything is fresh, exciting, a little overwhelming.

You step outside, taking in the unfamiliar streets, the sounds of a language you don’t understand, the scent of new food in the air. This is your new home now.

But first, you need milk.

A simple task, right? You walk to the supermarket, feeling a mix of confidence and curiosity. As you enter, you take a deep breath, this is just grocery shopping. No big deal.

Until you reach the milk aisle.

Rows and rows of cartons stare back at you. Some have pictures of cows, others have labels covered in words that mean absolutely nothing to you. You scan the shelves, low-fat, full-fat, organic, lactose-free, something called filmjölk? What even is that?!

Panic creeps in. There’s no one around to ask, and even if there were, what would you say? You pull out your phone, quickly typing regular milk into Google Translate. You find a translation, compare it to the labels, and take your best guess. Success!

Feeling victorious, you continue your shopping. Each item is a small battle, translating words, deciphering labels, hoping you’re making the right choices. But you do it. You conquer the grocery store.

You walk home, bags in hand, feeling like you’ve just unlocked an achievement. First solo grocery trip in a foreign country? Check!

At home, you eagerly pour yourself a glass of the milk you worked so hard to buy. You take a sip…

And immediately stop.

Something is wrong. This is not the milk you wanted. The taste is off, maybe too sour, too thick, too… not right. You look at the carton again. Oh no. It turns out you didn’t buy regular milk at all. You bought fermented milk.

Welcome to expat life, where even buying milk is an adventure!

This is most probably what happened to some of you, perhaps not with milk, but with other food.

When we arrived to Sweden some years ago we felt totally lost! We didn’t speak the language (even though, most of the people speaks English), it was not always easy to find what we needed or wanted, still some things are kind of difficult to find.

This is the reason we started this blog, to help other people who will move or have recently moved to Sweden by sharing tips and information to have an easy start of their new life.

Some situations in life should be piece of cake, easy peasy, easy as pie or as Swedes say Lätt som en plätt!
