I am a Psychology Coach for elite athletes – helping them to better both performance and their mental health. I offer a one-off 90min session or a 5-month support package (10*60min sessions).
My work includes a mixture of sports psychology and therapeutic tools to ensure both the ‘athlete’ and the ‘human’ are being supported.

What inspired you to start this business?
I have always been involved in sport and know that I would have benefitted from help when I was younger. I wanted to start this business in order to help athletes find their feet and improve – both on the performance circuit but also in their daily lives. Being an athlete comes with many challenges and if I can help guide the way to make it a rewarding and positive experience, then I’m content!

What challenges did you face starting a business abroad?
When I moved to Sweden I was lucky to already have a personal number but I had to jump through A LOT of additional hoops. It took 9 months to get myself set up. As I was due to work with clients worldwide, I really struggled to find insurance to cover me. All the big names didn’t want to cover me – so I ended up with a niche ‘alternative medicine’ group, which still doesn’t cover USA and Canada.

What advice would you give to other wanting to start a business?
Speak to many as people in the same situation as you as possible. When I moved I didn’t know anyone who was a sole trader and had the same residency issues as myself. I feel like if I had expanded my network initially, I could have gained advice from others.
Understand the tax and VAT system from the beginning and know that being a business owner in Sweden is hard but not impossible.

Any resources or networks that helped you along the way?
Groups on Facebook specific to your field and broader business ones too. People are always looking to connect and there are lots of great ideas on there.
I couldn’t have gotten off the ground without the help and advice from Nyföretagscentrum.
YouTube! Such a helpful resource when filling in forms and understanding processes, e.g. Skatteverket.
I would still be lost without my accountant.
