The other day, as I was walking back home through Södermalm, I noticed a small path leading uphill. It wasn’t marked by any signs, just a quiet trail inviting curiosity. I decided to follow it, not knowing where it would lead. I found myself standing on top of a rocky hill with one of the most breathtaking views I had ever seen in Stockholm. This is how I discovered this beautiful place.
Skinnarviksberget, the highest natural point in central Stockholm and a favorite spot for locals looking to escape the city without leaving it. If you haven’t been there yet, let me take you on a little journey to this special place.
A Little Bit of History
Skinnarviksberget wasn’t always the peaceful picnic spot it is today. Its name comes from the Swedish word “skinnare”, meaning “tanner” because back in the 17th and 18th centuries, this area was home to tanneries where animal hides were processed into leather. It was part of the old working-class Södermalm, filled with small cottages, workshops, and factories.
While those days are long gone, some traces remain, especially near Skinnarviksparken, where you can still find small red wooden houses from the 1700s. These cottages are a beautiful reminder of what Stockholm looked like before the modern city took shape.
How to Find Skinnarviksberget
Skinnarviksberget is located in Södermalm, a vibrant district known for its creative energy, indie shops, and scenic views. It’s easy to get there:
Nearest Metro Station: Zinkensdamm (Red Line) – about a 5-minute walk.
Alternative Metro Stop: Mariatorget (Red Line) – about 10 minutes away.
To reach the top, follow the narrow paths leading up from Skinnarviksparken or take a side street from Monteliusvägen, another scenic walking path. The short climb is absolutely worth it!
The Best Free View in Stockholm
When I first reached the top of Skinnarviksberget, I was completely blown away. Before me stretched a 360-degree view of Stockholm:
Riddarfjärden, the bay of Lake Mälaren, sparkling in the sunlight.
Stockholm City Hall, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
Kungsholmen & Norrmalm, the modern districts buzzing with life.
Västerbron Bridge, stretching across the water.
It’s beautiful at any time of day, but sunset is pure magic. The sky turns shades of pink and orange, and the city lights start to twinkle. On warm summer nights, you’ll find locals sitting on blankets, chatting, laughing, and enjoying the moment with snacks and drinks.
If you’re into photography, this is one of the best spots in the city to capture Stockholm’s skyline.
A Peaceful Escape: Högalidsparken
Not far from Skinnarviksberget, I also discovered Högalidsparken, another peaceful green space in Södermalm. It surrounds Högalid Church, a striking twin-towered church built in the early 1900s.
Högalidsparken is much quieter than Skinnarviksberget, making it perfect for a relaxed walk or a peaceful break before heading up to catch the sunset. It’s also a great place to sit with a book or just enjoy the fresh air.

Tips for Visiting Skinnarviksberget
Bring a blanket. The rocks aren’t the most comfortable to sit on.
Come early for sunset. It gets busy, so grab a spot early.
Leave no trace. There are no trash bins up there, so take your garbage with you.
Wear comfy shoes. The climb is short but a little steep.
Bring snacks & drinks. There are no shops directly at the top, so come prepared!
Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you’re not looking for them. That’s how I found Skinnarviksberget, and now it’s one of my favorite places in Stockholm. Whether you’re new to the city, just visiting, or have lived here for years, this place offers a moment of peace, a stunning view, and a true connection to the city.
