iinvested is a creative agency that specializes in creating impactful event photography.

What inspired you to start this business?
A friend asked for help with photographing an event so I decided to give it a go as a freelancer. I had been photographing different subjects as a hobby for 16 years. I’d also worked with event management, managed a series of micro events and built a community for food tech enthusiasts that became 1,000 people over 4 years with zero budget. So I went into it with insights of what brands need to highlight to make the most of their event content and community engagement, as well as an understanding of the logistical side.

What challenges did you face starting a business abroad?
It was tough getting my head around the different organizations I needed to know and register with, and to understand the procedure for registering my company and managing daily operations and accounting software in a different language.

What advice would you give to other wanting to start a business?
Don’t be afraid to talk to people and get advice. Lots of people are willing to share their knowledge and experiences and hearing about other people’s lessons can help you to avoid making costly mistakes.

I also recommend hiring someone to help you set up your business, do your accounting, and teach you everything you need to know to keep your books in order.

Also don’t quit your day job. Most businesses fail and having financial security while you explore your business ideas means you have more freedom. Only quit your day job if you’re making enough money through your own business, and your data shows that time is the only limiting factor for you to bring in more revenue. It will take longer than you think to build up your network, become “known”, receive referrals from happy customers and adjust your pricing to make it sustainable.

Any resources or networks that helped you along the way?
I watched free webinars from Skatteverket, got help creating a budget from Nyföretagarcentrum (they have offices everywhere!), went to loads of free events for business owners and entrepreneurs, and met some great people along the way.
